Omphalos

The musical cultural association Omphalos aims to disseminate and promote the knowledge of ethnic and popular music from countries bordering the Mediterranean and beyond.

Its name means “the centre”, as the ancient Delphi, the navel of the world in ancient Greece which was a reference point for various cultures of the mediteranean sea. Starting out from ancient Greece, where in the asclepiums (ancient theatres), music and theatre were conceived as forms of therapy to ensure the psycho-physical well-being of the spectators, Omphalos takes its cue from these ancient traditions, expanding also to African, Middle Eastern and southern Italian traditions to make music an important means of training and also of personal growth for young students.

Omphalos, with the continuous study and research of traditions and the constant updating on the latest innovations, mainly deals with the production and promotion of live-concert,  music education (including workshop activities such as drum circle, vocal circle) and children’s theatre, teaching different styles and genres of music that take up the traditions of the main Mediterranean countries, North Africa, the Middle East, the Balkans, Southern Italy, Spain and Portugal, mixing with the genres of contemporary music (rock, pop, light music, jazz, world music).

Since 2012, the Omphalos association has organised the event entitled: ‘Say it with notes play it with words’ for 8 consecutive editions, through which an average of 20 young pupils have performed in various live performances and collective activities, after having followed a training course of relevant importance for their personal growth that has enabled them to experience music as active protagonists.
